Before you buy a used camera
Check your Pentax and Ricoh shutter count
Check the shutter count of a Pentax DSLR or a Ricoh GR or WG camera from one original photo. PEF, DNG and JPG work, and the photo never leaves your browser.
What the Pentax and Ricoh number counts
Pentax and Ricoh write the count into maker-note field 0x005d, hidden with the shooting date and time. Cutsoo uses the date and time in the same file to recover it.
So a file whose date was edited gives a wrong value. If a seller's photo has an odd date, check again with a fresh shot.
This is a mechanical shutter count. Live view and video aren't counted, and it can reset after a repair.
How to check a Pentax and Ricoh shutter count
- Take a photo now. The newer the photo, the closer it is to the current count.
- Copy the original file (PEF, DNG or JPG) from the memory card with a card reader. Files sent through phone transfer apps or messengers can lose the data.
- Drop the file in the box above. Drop several at once to check they come from the same camera and that the count goes up in shooting order.

Pentax and Ricoh rated shutter life
These are the makers' published mechanical shutter test ratings. A rating isn't when the shutter fails, and many cameras last longer. The result compares the count with this figure: under 5% is barely used, under 25% lightly used, under 60% moderately used and under 100% heavily used.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work for the Ricoh GR III and GR IV?
Yes. The GR III, GR IIIx, GR IV and the WG series are supported. Ricoh cameras store the count the same way Pentax does.
Does changing the photo date change the count?
The count is hidden with the date and time, so a file edited afterwards gives a wrong value. A wrong camera clock is fine; only editing the file's date afterwards breaks it.
I shot a lot in live view. Is that counted?
No. Pentax and Ricoh record mechanical shutter actuations and don't count live view or video.
