About Cutsoo
Who makes Cutsoo and how we verify it
Cutsoo is a free tool for checking a used camera’s shutter count from one photo. This page explains how it reads the count and how we check that it is right.
Who makes it
Cutsoo is made and run by Eitri, a one-person workshop. It is not affiliated with any camera maker. Reach us at eitri.space@gmail.com or through the feedback link in the footer.
How the count is read
Each time a camera takes a photo it writes the shutter count so far into the maker notes inside the file. Each brand uses a different place and format.
- Sony: maker-note field 0x9050, hidden with a simple substitution cipher
- Canon: the CameraInfo block (0x000d), at a position that differs by model
- Nikon: maker-note field 0x00a7
- Pentax and Ricoh: maker-note field 0x005d, hidden with the shooting date and time
- Fujifilm: the image count in maker-note field 0x1438
Positions and formulas come only from public sources such as the ExifTool tag documentation. Files are read inside your browser and never sent anywhere. Brand details are on the Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Pentax and Ricoh pages.
How we verify it
Every reading is cross-checked against ExifTool, the standard tool for reading photo metadata. We read the public sample files from the ExifTool sample repository and raw.pixls.us with both Cutsoo and ExifTool. If any value differs, or Cutsoo returns a value where ExifTool has none, that model gets fixed or removed. Right now all 264 ExifTool sample files agree, with 0 mismatches.
The supported list (259 models) includes only models that pass this check. Models like the Canon EOS RP, which have a documented position that didn't hold up on samples, stay off the list until confirmed. The list is current as of 2026-11-05.
Where ratings and warranty facts come from
Rated shutter life comes from maker product pages and press releases first. When there is none, we use press or retailer sources and mark them as unofficial. Korean registration and warranty details were checked on each maker's official Korean pages on 2026-11-05.
Limits
The number Cutsoo shows is what the camera wrote into that photo. It doesn't reveal shutter replacements or repairs, and values in a file can be edited. It doesn't guarantee a camera's condition, so use the sensor test and the checklist as well.
Privacy
Photos are never uploaded. The privacy notice lists what usage data and failure diagnostics are sent.
