Check your Nikon shutter count

Check the shutter count of a Nikon Z series body, most Nikon DSLRs and Nikon 1 cameras from one original photo. NEF, NRW and JPG work, and the photo never leaves your browser.

What the Nikon number counts

Nikon writes the count, unenciphered, into field 0x00a7 of the maker notes. On models with an electronic shutter, it is total shots including the electronic shutter.

Some files also hold a mechanical-only count (0x0037). When it is there, the result shows it too.

The Z 8 and Z 9 have no mechanical shutter. For these two, read the number as photos taken, not shutter wear.

How to check a Nikon shutter count

  1. Take a photo now. The newer the photo, the closer it is to the current count.
  2. Copy the original file (NEF, NRW or JPG) from the memory card with a card reader. Files sent through phone transfer apps or messengers can lose the data.
  3. Drop the file in the box above. Drop several at once to check they come from the same camera and that the count goes up in shooting order.

Nikon rated shutter life

These are the makers' published mechanical shutter test ratings. A rating isn't when the shutter fails, and many cameras last longer. The result compares the count with this figure: under 5% is barely used, under 25% lightly used, under 60% moderately used and under 100% heavily used.

Frequently asked questions

I see both total shots and a mechanical count. Which one matters?

For shutter wear, use the mechanical count. Total shots include electronic shutter photos, so it is equal to or larger than the mechanical count.

Does the count mean anything on a Z 8 or Z 9?

Both have no mechanical shutter, so there is no shutter to wear out. The number tells you how much the camera has been used.

Should I use the NEF or the JPG?

Either works, as long as it is the original copied straight from the card. Photos sent through Nikon's app or a messenger can lose the data.
