Check your Fujifilm shutter count

Check the image count of a Fujifilm X series or GFX camera from one original photo. RAF and JPG work, and the photo never leaves your browser.

What the Fujifilm number counts

Fujifilm writes an image count, not a shutter count, into maker-note field 0x1438. Cutsoo shows it as approximate and does not compute a percentage of rated life.

The image count may include electronic shutter shots. It can reset to 0 after a firmware update, and it wraps back to 0 after 32,767.

For RAF files, Cutsoo reads the preview JPEG inside. For Fujifilm photos the result also shows a film simulation recipe card.

How to check a Fujifilm shutter count

  1. Take a photo now. The newer the photo, the closer it is to the current count.
  2. Copy the original file (RAF or JPG) from the memory card with a card reader. Files sent through phone transfer apps or messengers can lose the data.
  3. Drop the file in the box above. Drop several at once to check they come from the same camera and that the count goes up in shooting order.

Fujifilm rated shutter life

These are the makers' published mechanical shutter test ratings. A rating isn't when the shutter fails, and many cameras last longer. The result compares the count with this figure: under 5% is barely used, under 25% lightly used, under 60% moderately used and under 100% heavily used.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the Fujifilm count exact?

Fujifilm files hold an image count, not a mechanical shutter count. It can reset with a firmware update and wraps at 32,767, so it can read lower than real use.

Does it work for GFX?

Yes. The GFX 50S, 50R, 50S II, GFX100 II, GFX100S II and GFX100RF are supported. The value is the same image count as on X series bodies.

The number looks too small.

It may have restarted after a firmware update or wrapped past 32,767. Judge it together with the body, the shutter sound and the sensor.
