Check your Canon shutter count
Check the shutter count of a Canon EOS R5, R6, R6 Mark II, R8, R50 or EOS-1D series body from one original photo. CR3, CR2 and JPG work, and the photo never leaves your browser.
What the Canon number counts
Canon stores the count inside the CameraInfo block of the maker notes. Its position differs by model, so Cutsoo reads only models whose position has been confirmed with public documentation and real sample files.
Canon’s value is total shots, including the electronic shutter. On a body that used the electronic shutter a lot, real shutter wear is lower than the number.
For the EOS-1D Mark III and 1Ds Mark III the value is known to be right only on some bodies, and the result says so.
Models such as the EOS R, R3, R7 and R10, and most Canon DSLRs, don’t store the count in files. cameras that don’t store the count explains what to do instead.
How to check a Canon shutter count
- Take a photo now. The newer the photo, the closer it is to the current count.
- Copy the original file (CR3, CR2 or JPG) from the memory card with a card reader. Files sent through phone transfer apps or messengers can lose the data.
- Drop the file in the box above. Drop several at once to check they come from the same camera and that the count goes up in shooting order.

Canon rated shutter life
These are the makers' published mechanical shutter test ratings. A rating isn't when the shutter fails, and many cameras last longer. The result compares the count with this figure: under 5% is barely used, under 25% lightly used, under 60% moderately used and under 100% heavily used.
| Model | Rated life | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CANON EOS R5 | 500,000 | canon.ca |
| CANON EOS R6 | 300,000 | canon.ca |
| CANON EOS R6 Mark II | 400,000 | lowyat.net (press or retailer) |
| CANON EOS-1D Mark III | 300,000 | global.canon |
The EOS RP (rated 100,000) is left out until reading it is confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check the shutter count on a Canon R7, R10 or R3?
These models don't write the count into photo files, so it can't be read from a file. A Canon service center can check it. Before buying, also run the sensor test and the checklist.
Does the EOS RP work?
Not yet. Public documentation lists a position, but it didn't hold up on real sample files, so the RP is off the list. If you drop an RP original and use 'Help support this model' on the result, we'll use it to check.
Do electronic shutter shots count?
Yes. The value Canon writes is total shots, so the mechanical shutter may have fired fewer times.
